The exchange facilitates matching peers with respect to writing skill. It is not reasonable to expected a 6th grader to edit college level writing and perhaps visa versa. Each participant is rated on a coarse scale for writing and editing ability by other participants. Peers are matched on the basis of composite ability scores.
You can also take the opportunity to improve your editing ability. When two or more participants edit the same manuscript then the highest rated review is made available to the other reviewers. By writing your own critique and then studying the best critique, you can refine your skill with words.
